The children’s television show “Sesame Street” has added a new character to the TV series. Her name is Julia and she has been a part of the storybooks for quite some time. The storybooks are so popular, they decided to add the orange-haired muppet to the show.

Julia is a unique muppet; she has autism. The writers wanted the families and viewers with autism to have a character they could identify with. The writers knew it was a touchy subject, so they were unsure of how they were going to have it done.

“Sesame Street has always dealt with the real,” said Joan Ganz Cooney, one of the founders of Children’s Television Workshop. The show has not been afraid to face the harshness of reality, like the death of Mr. Hooper in 1983. Mr. Hooper was one of the first human characters to appear on the TV show. He was part of the show since 1969, when it first aired. He had an impact on many people and helped the young audience how to deal with death early on in their lives.

They like to keep things real and not stray from the path they’ve already paved for themselves. So they did not dress up another man and call him Mr. Hooper, hoping no one would notice.

Once the new character, Julia, debuts for the first time in April, it will be shown what autism looks like and all the ways it can look like in real life. It will show the struggle of how it is difficult for those with autism to communicate with others on the same level.

The goal here is to make those with autism feel like they’re just as important as any other person, and Sesame Street does a great job of making the characters feel included.

“I feel like this was a smart move on their part. I hope that sesame street keeps this vibe going and influences other shows to follow their footsteps on some way or another.” said sophomore Grace Liava’a.
