Net neutrality has been in debate ever since the Obama administration. Basically, large corporations believe that the internet should be heavily regulated, treating it much like a cable service provider. Offering certain parts of the net in package deals that you pay for, if it worked this way then your internet speed could be limited based on how much the person pays or other, less obvious factors. Also, an individual’s internet habits could be tracked way more easily.

Right now, the internet is available to anyone who just pays a flat rate for an internet provider. They may already pay enough for streaming services like Hulu, Netflix and, YouTube Red, etc. Paying for the internet now is much like paying the power company. Pay a rate, get a service, no restrictions on what the individual powers as long as it’s within limits.

Since Trump’s election, he and his cabinet have been trying to dismantle the regulations put in place by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Under these regulations, the providers can’t slow or block legal content that their consumers want to reach.

There may be hope for net neutrality as some members of congress are willing to for it. Senator Al Franken said, “Allowing giant companies to pick and choose the content available to everyday Americans would threaten the basic principles of our democracy.”

It seems the future of net neutrality is unclear. The way things are going, it’ll probably be repealed. Most likely, the old ways of the internet will be missed.
