School secretaries work very hard every day, and never get enough credit for what they do. Students usually don’t even know their names, but they have spoken to a school secretary at least once in their lives.

Hillcrest is proud to present it’s own head secretary for the main office, Mrs. Palmer.

“We do a lot of things. We buy the food, answer the phones, and mostly just focus on the fees that students have to pay,” Palmer explains.

The secretary doesn’t just sit at the desk all day, but they also order products for the classrooms, take care of any paperwork that happens when you go on field trips, and plan parties for the faculty and staff.

Although attendants do so much, students can be very disrespectful to them, and the associates don’t take anything from them.

Palmer recalls,“…he (a student) kicked the door and got very mad. It was very disrespectful, but we don’t take it.” Their way of dealing with students like this, is to not work with the students if they are going to be disrespectful to the secretaries.

“I also work with the principal, so it’s my name that he calls,” Palmer jokes, although it is very much true. Not only do secretaries work with the students, but they also work with the staff and teachers. “Sometimes their demands are a bit high, but we can keep it cool.”

Students and teachers alike can be very disrespectful to the secretaries of a school, and yet they put up with the stuff that the students and staff may give them. This secretary appreciation week, all are created equal and are working as hard as they can to make sure Hillcrest high is the best it can be.
