It’s the 50 year anniversary of the Battle of the Ax, a huge wrestling match up between Hillcrest and Brighton. The tradition started in 1969, and since the two schools are rivals it has always been a fierce matchup. Brighton had won 45 of the 50 matches prior to the 2019 matchup.

Hillcrest put up a big fight this year, but lost to Brighton 36-33. The fight came down to the final round and ended with Brighton Freshman, Tyler Knaak, taking the lead in the final matchup against Hillcrest Freshman, Jason Barnes.

“It was a good team effort we just couldn’t close it,” said Hillcrest Senior Noah Nicholls, He and a few others agreed that the team gave it their all and they are very proud of the efforts.

“We would have loved to bring home the Ax, especially for our senior year,” said Brock Lloyd, another senior on the Hillcrest team. It would have been a big deal for Hillcrest to take down Brighton.

Brighton has always had a dominating wrestling team. Since the school was built in 1969, they have always been great at the sport.

Although it is a hard and heart breaking loss for Hillcrest, the team looks forward to the match next year and the years to come. Next year the match up will be at Hillcrest and it will be an intense matchup between the rival schools.
