The Australian Open is the first major tennis tournament of each season and it excites tennis fans for the year to come. This year is the 107th Australian Open. This Grand Slam tournament is worth 2,000 points toward a players ranking. It is held in Melbourne, Australia and has the best tennis players from around the world competing.

The Australian Open has become a Grand Slam and one of the biggest tennis tournaments of the season over its past 107 years of existence. They are one of the most progressive Grand Slams because they play on hard courts unlike the French Open and Wimbledon.

Last year Roger Federer won the men singles final against Marin Cilic 6-2, 6-7, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. Caroline Wozniacki also defeated Simona Halep in the women singles final 7-6, 3-6, 6-4.

Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic battled in the final on Sunday, January 28. Djokovic swept in a straight set win 6-3 6-2 6-3 in the Rod Laver Arena. Naomi Osaka and Petra Kvitova played in the women’s final. Osaka, winner of the US Open and rising star, beat Kvitova 7-6 5-7 6-4.

Federer, the defending champion from 2018, lost in the round of 16 this year to Stefanos Tsitsipas. Tsitsipas is a greek tennis player who is currently ranked 14th in the world. He is only 20 years old and a rising star in the world of men’s tennis. Later in the tournament, Tsitsipas lost to Rafael Nadal.

Serena Williams lost in the quarter final this year after not participating last season due to her pregnancy. Earlier in the tournament, however, Williams knocked off world number 1 Simona Halep.
