Peter Mayhew, the actor who played Chewbacca, passed away on April 30, 2019. The 7 foot 3 “gentle giant” has starred in many films. He has starred in movies such as “Terror” and “Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger.” but he is best known as Chewbacca from the “Star Wars” series.

According to Wikipedia, he was born in Surrey, England in 1944. 74 years later he passed away in Boyd, Texas. His career in acting started in 1977 as a minotaur and later that year Star Wars was released with him as Chewbacca. He also appeared in many other films as Chewbacca such as “The Muppet Show” and the “Star Wars Christmas Special.” In 1999 he married Angelique Mayhew. Together they had three kids and never seperated.

He started his career as Chewy when the director found him in a health care facility as an orderly. His walk was exactly what they were looking for and he instantly got the job.

Mayhew also helped coach the new actor for Chewy. Joonas Suotamo received advise on being a wookie from Mayhew.

Star Wars fans are devestated with the loss. George Lucas, the director of Star Wars, wrote a touching tribute to Mayhew.

He said, “He was very gentle, very sweet, very easy to get along with.”

The high praise from the director show what kind of man Mayhew was. He was also honored by many others such as the International Space Station and Joonas Suotamo. He was loved on and off the screen.
