Over the past couple of months and years, the list of celebrities and politicians caught in blackface scandals has grown longer and longer. The most recent is the prime minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau.

On Wednesday, September 18, Time Magazine released a photo of Trudeau wearing blackface as part of a costume. He had been attending an Arabian nights-themed party at the private academy where he taught at the time.

According to Time Magazine, they obtained the photo from Michael Adamso, who saw the photo in the school yearbook and decided that it needed to be made public.

“I just think it’s very ironic, he’s the guy that you would think that would never do this because he is so liberal,” junior Kai Ellingson said.

Since then, two other incidents of Trudeau darkening his skin have been discovered. Once to sing “Day-O,” at a high school talent show, and once more in the early 1990s. He has even acknowledged that other photos of him in racist make-up might exist.

“I hurt people who in many cases consider me an ally,” Trudeau told a news conference. “I let a lot of people down.”

All of this is taking place just weeks before elections are for a new prime minister, but for many, these incidents will probably not change their vote.

“Some 42 percent of those polled by Abacus said they weren’t really bothered by seeing the PM caught in brown face and blackface, and 34 percent said they didn’t like it but accepted his apology and could get over it,” the National Post reported.
