The Grammys is finally being called out on their lack of diversity and open mindedness. Recent criticism has put their legitimacy on the line. The Grammy Award ceremony is hosted by The Recording Academy annually. They are an organization made up of  musicians, producers and just musical professionals in general. The Grammys is suppose to be a prestige event held to acknowledge and award outstanding achievements in the music industry. But as of lately the Recording Academy’s racism has been shining through in their awarding.

Musicians are being nominated in categories they don’t belong in. The Recording Academy fails to keep up with the evolution of pop music and evolving artists. Too many genre bending musicians are shunned and their work is ignored. Could this be because of the color of their skin or the preconceived titles?

For example the very famous Drake has been awarded Grammys in the category “Best Rap Song” for songs that aren’t rap.

“I’m a black artist, I’m apparently a rapper, even though ‘Hotline Bling’ is not a rap song,” said Drake in an Interview with DJ Semtex.

Numerous musicians have taken notice of these issues with the Recording Academy and have spoken out about them. During his interview at the 2020 Grammys, Tyler, The Creator speaks about winning the Grammy for “Best Rap Album.”

“It sucks that whenever we, and I mean guys that look like me, do anything that’s genre bending or anything, they put us in the rap or urban category, and I don’t like that urban word. It’s just a politically correct way to say the N-word to me,” said Tyler.

The Recording Academy being an organization in the music industry needs to keep up with the changing times and drop their bias views. Music is changing and the Grammys should be an event to where these changes are accepted and praised.
