Fun Facts:

  • Otters live on every continent except Australia and Antarctica.
  • Otters are a member of the Mustelidae family, and are cousins with weasels.
  • There are 13 different Otter species:Eurasian Otter, Hairy-nosed Otter, Spotted-necked Otter, smooth-coated Otter, North American River Otter, South American river Otter, Neotropical river otter, Marine Otter, Giant Otter, Asian Small-Clawed Otter, African Clawless Otter, Congo Clawless Otter, and (most common) the Sea Otter!
  • 90% of Otters live on the coast of Alaska
  • Otters eat LOTS of food! Their diet consists mainly of crustaceans, mussels, snails, crabs, sea urchins, and other slow moving water creatures. Sea Otters eat 25% of their body weight each day.
  • Sea Otters can hold their breath for 5 minutes, and river otters can hold it up to 8 minutes.
  • They have the thickest fur out of any animal! Per square inch, otters have between 850,000 and 1 million hairs. Their skin consists of two layers, and undercoat and overcoat (the fur you see.) Unlike other marine mammals, Otters do not have a layer of blubber. As a result they have to rely on their water-resistant fur for insolation.
  • Each different Otter species has a different weight gap. The smallest otters are the Marine Otters, weighing a minimum (full grown) of about 6.5 lbs. The largest would be the Giant Otter. This species can weigh up to 80bs and can grow to about 6 feet long!
  • Baby Otters are called pups.
  • Otters have quick reflexes which helps them catch their prey. To open their food, Otters will often pry open shells with a rock. They often store their food in the skin under their armpits.
  • Otters float on their backs and use their bellies as a table when eating.
  • Beware, Otters have a harsh bite and a nasty temper, they are fiesty animals.
