Hillcrest’s wrestling team coaches are making preparations for the coming winter season despite the challenges that a COVID-19 year poses. Wrestling in the state of Utah has just recently received the go-ahead, and future practices are being planned in full force.

Nick Pappas, head coach for the Hillcrest Wrestling team, says, “I’m anticipating lots of change regarding policies and procedures for the upcoming year.”

Already, procedures for before and after practices have changed to protect the students and their families and masks will be worn by spectators and on the sidelines.

Though the practices themselves are staying the same, the coaches are busy figuring out practice schedules that will comply with the state guidelines that are locking down hard. In the future there might be the possibility for split practices.

Nevertheless, Pappas is looking forward to the new year in a new building, calling it a “breath of fresh air.” The team is getting new uniforms and gear as well as a whole new wrestling room with matts in the downstairs gym tunnel.

“Hopefully it creates culture. A sense of responsibility,” remarks Pappas about the new room and gear, comparing it to the old and hard to clean rubber room.

Hopes are high for the upcoming year and could be one of the Hillcrest’s team’s best seasons yet. There are very good students returning that have a good chance at placing at the State competition.

One of the big issues they have this year will be finding students who are interested to come try out for the team.

Even so, Pappas says that. “It should be a good year. Now we finally have good leadership in place and hopefully they will be able to show what they can do.”
