The Weeknd “After Hours” Album Review

The Weeknd “After Hours” Album Review

The Weeknd, also known as Abel Tesfaye, released his “After Hours” album on March 20, 2020. This shows a different side of Tesfaye that we haven’t seen before. This album shows growth because his past projects have just been about sexual relationships and drugs. Now, he expresses remorse. Each song has incredible transitions between each other, yet they all stand out and add to the story.

Overall, the album is mostly about Tesfaye acknowledging his own toxic traits, heartbreak, and acceptance. The story is split into three parts. In the beginning, Tesfaye knows that he was the problem in the relationship. In the middle of the story, he has a moment where he knows he’s the bad guy, and he does nothing to change that. At the end, he is alone and wants to kill the person he’s become. Nevertheless, he has accepted everything in the relationship and his actions.

One of my favorite tracks is “Scared To Live.” It has lyrics such as, “When I saw the signs, I shoulda let you go, / but I kept you beside me and if I held you back at least I held you close,” Along with others like, “I hope you know that we fell apart, / right from the start.”

Tesfaye knows he’s not the same person he used to be. Even when the woman he’s with tries to leave, her heart only knows him and all that he’s put her through. Tesfaye admits he’s not who he used to be and he should’ve made her his only.

Tesfaye does a great job with hiding such dark lyrics with really beautiful 80’s dream pop and R&B.The best example of this is in the track “Faith”. Lyrics such as, “I’ve been sober for a year, / now it’s time for me to go back to my old ways, / don’t you cry for me thought i’d be a better man but,/ I lied to me and to you,” This is Tesfaye accepting that he is the villain and he goes back to his old habits.

In the second verse, he talks about how if he overdoses, he wants her to be with him. The song ends with sirens and his outro verse is that he ended up in the back of a flashing car.

The final song off of that album is “Until I bleed Out” and the pre-chorus lyrics are, “Well, I don’t want to touch the sky no more I just want to feel the ground when I’m coming down it’s been way too long,” This song really shows that he wants to change. He tells himself that he doesn’t need drugs or love but it’s just a cycle that he just can’t get out of.

There was a deluxe album released with three bonus tracks. The last song on of the album is appropriately named “Final Lullaby” and the chorus is, “And I can’t make you stay in this broken place and I hope you find your peace close your eyes as I put us to sleep,” This means that he finally putting the relationship to rest and it’s finally the end of it.

Rating is 5 out of 5 paws, one of the best albums with a great story line.
