Lights at temple square to be celebrated virtually

For the first time in 65 years, Christmas is going to be celebrated a little differently in downtown Salt Lake City.

Every year, the grounds surrounding the Salt Lake Temple are lit up with an array of thousands of different Christmas lights. People from all over the west come to visit Temple Square annually with family, church groups, and friends.

But due to the pandemic and the renovation of the Salt Lake Temple, this special event will take place virtually.

According to the Church of Jesus Christ newsroom, the temple grounds will be closed off at 4 p.m. and the lights will turn everyday at 5 p.m. For those wishing to view the lights in person, you will have to do so safely from outside the temple ground gates.

In a live broadcast on December 1, two sister missionaries gave a virtual tour of the temple grounds with the lights shown in the background. It is available to watch at

Luckily, Temple Square is not the only place with an eye-catching display of Christmas lights.

  • To add my personal favorite, Heber and Midway

Christmas 2020 may be a little different, but it will be just as bright!
