Returning to play after 2020 season cut short

Everyone has been waiting for spring sports since March 2020, and finally in March 2021, a whole year later, we are able to have them. We all look forward to spring sports because it means that warmer weather is around the corner.

“I think the team would have really made it far and I am sad that I didn’t get to go to St.George with last year’s team,” says Nicole Aragundi, Hillcrest High Schools senior softball player.

Spring sports at Hillcrest high consist of men’s soccer, softball, track and field, golf, and baseball.

Tryouts for softball and baseball were held Monday, March 1st, track and field and golf had no tryouts because everyone automatically makes it, and soccer tryouts were held Monday, March 1 and 2.

In order to try out for the teams, each participant had to be tested and show a negative COVID-19 test result.

All spring sports are very different this year because of COVID-19. There are protocols the teams still have to follow, such as wearing a mask, getting tested every two weeks, and social distance when possible.

Emma Ashby, a Hillcrest High School Junior on track says, “I really wouldn’t say that they are necessarily hard to follow the protocols because our coaches keep it so organized. Sometimes it’s just annoying but we do it for everyone’s safety”

Athletes that participate in spring sports are filled with joy because even though COVID-19 is still around they are still able to play and do their sports when they have waited a whole year to do so.

“When the season ended last year I really missed all the friends I had made, so I am glad I get to be able to run with my friends this year!” says Ashby.

Baseball, softball, and track and field start in February and end in May, girls golf starts in March and ends in May, and boys soccer starts in January and ends in May.

Go out enjoy the sun and support our spring sports teams because this year has been a hard year and they deserve all the support they can get!
