The official start to the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) season is here, and it starts with the Fall Conference on 27 and 28 of October. This year, the conference is was held at the Hilton Hotel in downtown Salt Lake.

“Fall Leadership Conference was really great this year,” an FBLA member said. “Our keynote speaker, Patty Hendrickson, was amazing…Overall, the conference ran really smoothly. There were a lot of workshops and each had a decent turnout.”

The Fall Conference provides members with opportunities to gain information and skills that they will need for Region and State competitions. Instead of having competitions, as Region and State do, Fall Conference has a variety of workshops and seminars.

“Members can learn from different professionals,” senior and FBLA state secretary, Soyoung Jeon said, “And they can actually have a chance to create connections with them [professionals]…and with their State Officers…to get to know them better.”

The seminars range from information about competitive events and learning what it takes to become a state officer, to learning how to dress professionally.

Nine Hillcrest students will attend the conference this year. Each school in the region sends a different amount of students as chapter officers looking to become state officers. Chapter officers only have jurisdiction in the school’s chapter, compared to the state with state officers.

“[State Officers] were appointed in March,” Jeon added. “This is the first time that the state officers actually take action…this is first time that people get to actually meet us, so it’s meaningful to us.”

Fall Conference also informs members on this year’s FBLA fundraiser, March of Dimes. March of Dimes is a non-profit organization stationed in Salt Lake, which aims to improve the life of babies by fighting premature birth. As the FBLA season continues, more information on the fundraiser will come and they will provide aid to the March of Dimes organization.
