The Hillcrest Huskies cheerleading team heading to Anaheim, California. They left on March 23 and returned on March 27.

The team won the 2016-2017 co-ed state championship this year. They now get to advance to the nationals competition, which is a huge accomplishment.

The team will be going to Disneyland for two days, spending a day at the beach, and having team dinners together. Before they do that, they will be competing at the Anaheim Convention Center.

Nationals is the next step after the state competition. The team of 30 members will compete against all the other teams in the world that qualified for nationals. If they move on after the first day, they get to compete a second day for a chance to be national champions.

Cheer has three coaches: Candice Simmons, Carly Dent, and Erika Wilde. The captains of the team for varsity are Mikayla Kershaw and Izzy Deloney. The JV captains are Melissa Wainwright and Maya Everett.

Freshmen varsity cheerleader Annyka Scherschligt has loved being on the cheer team this year. A quote she lives by is, “In the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.”

The team has worked so hard this year to go to nationals. Now it is almost time for them to compete. The girls couldn’t be more excited for this amazing opportunity. Their team motto is #challengeaccepted, and they have accepted the challenge.

We are so proud of our cheerleading team for winning state, and for making it to nationals. Good luck girls!
