What do those who have trouble get? A month, that’s what! Mental Health Awareness month, in May 2017, is there to help those who have a mental limitation.

According to WhatHealth.com, Negative attitudes and stigma associated with mental health have reduced and there has been growing acceptance towards mental health issues and support for people with them.

This month is partially due to modern acceptance.

“Nobody should have to feel like they don’t belong because they are different from others, explained Eden Chambers of Hillcrest High.

This tradition is not “new” news. Actually, it was started in the 1960’s as a weekly event, until eventually it was changed to an annual occurrence, set in a certain month, which happened to be May. Now we have computers where many can get better, more trustworthy information about mental health, which promotes more acceptance, causing the “Mental Month” to change along with the cultures and times of the day.

This is a month of living life to the fullest, although said people are different from others. “This should be a way for us to celebrate our differences, not our similarities,Ms. Chambers indicates.

Every year there is a theme around the mental awareness. In 2010 it was “Live your Life” which was trying to encourage people to take responsibility for the prevention of mental issues that cause personal stress and a challenge to personal life. “This year, we could have it (the theme) be many things, like ‘Be yourself’ or ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’,” Chambers suggests. The theme this year, 2017, is actually “risky business,” which will show the warning signs of depression and.or high anxiety.

According to WhatHealth.com, to work with Mental Health Awareness month, other mental health campaigns and activities also try to help those with mental issues during this month. National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day is one campaign that likes to help the month to gain attention.
