The old saying, “Golf stands for gentlemen only, ladies forbidden” is simply not true. The phrase is actually quite ironic due to the major increase of female golfers.

Over the years, women’s golf has become a more popular sport among female student athletes. Getting recruited, as well as receiving scholarships, is becoming more and more available to female golfers all over the country. Thousands of scholarships are available each year for female golfers through the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

The NCSA (Next College Student Athlete) a major recruiting network said in regards to golf, “It is generally believed that the women’s golf market is underserved with a golf subculture that has long been dominated by a male sensibility. But with the ready availability of women’s golf scholarships, that may soon change.”

Men have typically dominated this sport and because of this many colleges are offering more scholarships to females. This even allows girls who are not that great the ability to still play and get better in college.

Now, golf is an equivalency sport.  This means that coaches and administration have flexibility in the way scholarship funds are distributed. This shows that because a girl who golfs may not get a full ride or any other scholarship, but her chances are much higher than for other sports. NCAA stated that it was estimated in 2014 that over 200 of the approximately 1800 female golf scholarships were not used.”

Ladies times are changing and golf is a great way to benefit from that change. There are even golf courses strictly “Men Only” that are now being opened to women, same thing with scholarships. The LGPA is now offering many scholarships to high school girls as well as programs to improve. This in turn will someday completely change the face of women’s golf.
