Emotional and mental pain is a REAL thing, and quite possibly the most powerful in teenagers. The reason is because teenagers brains are still developing, and they aren’t quite sure how to control or understand their emotions.

Some words and phrases that are used today such as: triggered, black, retarded, I’m going to kill myself, etc, can hurt people. Whether they are offended by the use of the word, or the word itself, it can still emotionally damage them.

“Personally, I don’t really care about the name calling because I don’t let it offend me. I don’t pay attention to it and it’s not important to me,” said Charlie Case, a senior at Hillcrest. He believes it is your choice whether or not to get offended, and he chooses not to.

A lot of trendy words used are offensive to those with mental health disabilities. One that has been used a lot recently is “triggered.” The word is generally used for those who may have anger issues, anxiety, depression, etc.

For example, when someone who has anger issues is triggered, it means that their emotions are uncontrollable and they lose their temper. Or when someone with anxiety is triggered, their flight response kicks in and they may begin to cry or panic.

People tend to not think about what they say before they say it, which causes a lot of problems. Those with mental health disabilities may not be taken seriously when they say they are triggered, which can cause massive problems.

Ryan Bangerter, a senior at Hillcrest said, “Some people may choose to get offended and some can’t control whether or not they get offended.” Those that have those disabilities may hear something said and their brain can’t erase it, so it’s not just offense but permanent damage.

People, especially young adults who are starting the trends, need to really think about what slang is becoming popular and how it can affect people. Some things can even cause people to give up on life and want to just leave everyone and everything behind.

Triggered may be just one word but it can cause a hurricane of emotional damage, along with many others.  A word of advice: Think about what you say before you say it.
