Yearly schools around America celebrate red ribbon week in an attempt to keep kids drug free and well educated on the dangers of drugs. Hillcrest high, much like any school, has a week of events planned out for kids to participate in.

The week October 23 through 27 is what is planned for Hillcrest to be drawing awareness to it. The theme of this year is to focus on mental health and calling attention to illnesses. This lies right before the end of quarter and Husky Howl, so it’s already a big week for students to be focusing in on school, with plans for the upcoming dance and end of quarter trying to finalize grades.

“A big goal we have this year is just involving the clubs in with everything,” Justin Matagi, vice principal, states. Clubs and school officials all alike are working toward all upcoming events for Hillcrest, however, for red ribbon week all the events are geared toward helping students cope with stress.

The SBO’s are hard at work trying to to plan and prepare for the week of events, but what exactly are the events? The entire week has fun events for kids to participate in and they are:

  • Monday: Glow Yoga at 7:00 in the dance studio
  • Tuesday: Drive In movie at 7:00 in the parking lot
  • Wednesday: Blood Drive
  • Thursday: Haunted House at 7:00 in the gym

Students are frustrated with the idea of the drive in movie once again because previously for spirit week right before homecoming but because of rain it was canceled. Students had voted for High School Musical to be played and were promised that the event would take place later in the spring. Another try at a movie sounds risky so late in the year.

The haunted house is a new tradition that was started last year by SBO’s. They plan to start having it every year just to give a little more school spirit and Halloween spirit around the holiday.
