The Debbie Downers is a wonderful new alternative-indie band in Salt Lake City. Some of their members are and used to be students here at Hillcrest High School, Band members include Josh Giolas and Eoghan Knibbe on guitar, lead vocals, Allyson Katana, Elliot Emery on drums, and Haven Johansen on bass. All extremely talented musicians.

“I feel like we have elements of a lot of different bands” The drummer, Elliot Emery explained,”our sound is mostly punk rock, but our singing is more indie. Kind of like arcade fire. That’s one of the bands we all look up to.” Allyson Katana loves the Dead Kennedy’s and loves their sound and incorporates some of their sound into their music.

Katana, the lead singer, brings a great indie-vibe to their punk rock sound. One of her favorite songs that she wrote for the band is called Velvet. “I feel like that song has transformed the most as a band, and I also love the power behind it.”

It’s an absolute beautiful song, and it’s even better live.

They played their first show as a band at the Beehive Social Club on October 3.”The crowd was incredible. It was very different from other venues i’ve played.” Katana explained.”I liked how I could see so many more faces.”

“I want people like us to come to our shows, people who care about the music. I feel like the problem is with music nowadays is that people listen to music with their eyes, not with their ears. I want kids to come that don’t care about what we look we look like, but what we sound like.” Emery said.

On December 8th, they are playing their second show at the Beehive Social Club and would love to see new faces.

If you have ever felt rebellious or teen angst in any way, The Debbie Downers are a band for you.
