If you’re vegan, you know how hard it is to find some decent, quality, fair-priced food. So, if you’re craving ice cream, head to downtown Salt Lake and go to Monkeywrench. This ice cream/coffee shop has many different ice cream options, ranging from S’mores, to Tea and Biscuits, to Mocha Almond Fudge.

The best part about this ice cream is that it is dairy free. So, if you are lactose intolerant, or trying to cut out dairy, this ice cream is perfect for you. A bonus to this cute little parlor is that they also have a ton of Gluten Free options, and almost all products are made in the shop.

The downside to these ice creams is that they are all coconut or banana based, which can sometimes lead to an overwhelming taste and/or texture. Given that these ice creams have a different base than normal, make sure you look at the ingredients before eating.

Not only does Monkeywrench offer ice cream, they have brownies, cookies, and other pastries. Next to the ice cream selection, there is the coffee section. Their coffee includes your typical latte, hot chocolate, chai, and multiple teas. Given that this is all vegan, they offer many different types of milk, such as, almond, coconut, and other nut based milks.

Roxy, owner of the parlor, says, ¨Owning a vegan business is an amazing feeling, largely because I don’t have to compromise any of my own values or morals to run a business.”

When asked how she sees the ice cream impact customers, Roxy says, It’s been amazing to hear from parents who have children with food allergies, kids who have never had ice cream before who can come in and enjoy their first ice cream cone.” This shows that this ice cream isn’t just for vegans, but for anyone willing to try.

Monkeywrench provides you with a huge cup full of ice cream right around the price of $3; talk about a deal. For only a couple of cents more, you can add chocolate chips, coconut shavings, graham crackers, or any other toppings.

Along with Monkeywrench, there is a vegan Mexican restaurant right next door owned by the same people called, Boltcutter. So, if you’re not feeling ice cream, or just need a bite to eat, head on over.
