Earthquakes occur along the Wasatch Fault Line every 350-400 years. The last major earthquake was 350 years ago so, it is no surprise that Utah is overdue for an earthquake.

There are many theories about Utah earthquakes that have been going on for years. According to good4utah.com, “Seismologists say that the next big earthquake is going to happen on the Wasatch Fault Line”. A seismologist is someone who studies the pattern of earthquakes.

The source also states that there are over 800 earthquakes in Utah each year that you won’t notice. The smaller earthquakes are building up to a larger earthquake, seismologists say 7.0 or larger.

What do we do when we are hit with a large earthquake? The Utah Shakeout Drill is a program invented to help companies, schools, households, and people in general prepare for when the Wasatch Fault Line has its next quake.

The Shakeout Drill was on April 19 at 10:15 a.m.  Over 950,000 participants registered according to www.shakeout.org. During the drill participants drop, cover and hold. Drop before you get dropped by the shaking, find something to climb under, and hold on until the shaking stops.

Shakeout.org states the next earthquake is expected to kill 2,300 people, injure 30,000 people, and cost the state $35,000,000,000 is building damages. The point of the drill is to save as many lives as possible during the earthquake. With many participants, the state is hopeful to increase the chances of saving lives.
