Placentophagy is the eating of the placenta. It does not involve cooking it up in the oven and putting salt and pepper on it, it’s mostly turned into pills, called encapsulation. Kim Kardashian and many other celebrities have been posted many times on social media about their encapsulated placenta.

To many mothers, placentophagy holds many benefits for both them and the baby. Such the decrease in postpartum depression. But scientists have found that there aren’t actually that many benefits, nor are there really any risks. So why do women do this?

The placenta is an organ is the women’s body that provides nutrients, food, and oxygen for the baby while in the womb. Your body loved that baby enough to make a whole other organ just to provide for it.  So a lot of women actually find eating their placenta more of a spiritual experience, along with the birth itself.

Some believe that after having their baby they experience a right of passage. A not only physical but spiritual transition for their body and their identity.

After the baby is born, the placenta is birthed dead in order to give that baby it’s first breathe. Yes, eating your placenta seems odd, but for a women who are only looking for a spiritual experience, find it truly beautiful.
