A study done by BMC medicine called ‘SMILES’ shows that eating a Mediterranean diet can reduce symptoms of depression. A group of Australians were tested in 2012 to see if this nut rich diet could help treat the notorious mental illness.

In the tests, 67 people with histories of depression and poor diet were split into two groups. One group was given dietary help, including an hour a week of Dietitian led nutrition help. The other group got social help including social support called ‘befriending’ where they would spend time with someone talking about various topics like sports, news, or music. Both groups were treated with a mixture of antidepressant medication or therapy.

After 12 weeks, the group given the dietary support showed a significant decrease in their depression. The study is not entirely conclusive, but it shows promise for those with depression.

Treatments for depression are not the same and are very different from person to person. Natural methods or prescriptions work for some, but they don’t always work.

“Prescriptions can have a lot of bad effects on your body so it’s cool that they don’t have to be the immediate option,” says Jacob Bangerter, a teenager who suffers from mental illnesses himself.

As mental illnesses are becoming more talked about, different ways, such as various diets, have come up to combat them.

“A few of my friends suffer from depression and it’s great that there are new ways that they can cope with it,” says Ella Copinga.

Researchers hope to continue their search to curb depression and this study is brings hope to them and those with the mental illness.
