People view helmets as the focal point of protection in any scope in the game of football, but evidence shows that they can actually cause more damage than protection. USA Today writer, Lindsay Jones stated,

“On average, there are 271 cases of concussions in the NFL alone, every year.”

People are starting to wonder if helmets are worth the risk. Although it can prevent a broken nose, or a black eye, it cannot prevent a concussion. Even though it can minimize the impact on the initial hit, it cannot prevent the repeated blows given to the head.

According to Webmd, Concussions can cause frequent headaches, vomiting, dementia, aggressiveness, ringing of ears, fainting, and more. If a person has received numerous concussions, it can result in death. An estimated 110 former NFL players have died from previous traumatic brain injuries.

My theory is that players believe that helmets can be used to prevent any head injury, so that is why you see players leading with their helmets to make some tackles. There is a reason why they had to make a targeting rule, which makes it so players can’t lead with their head, causing a head damage to a defenseless player, also known as spearing.

Players are used to using helmets as part of the game, but the game is evolving faster than some players can adapt. Back in the olden days, they used leather helmets. This made it so players felt less compelled to use their heads during physical contact. Granted, it did not mean that there were no concussions, but the number was significantly lower.

Even though leather helmets look weird, they significantly reduced injuries to the head. And I am sure people would rather not have traumatic brain injuries when they are 50.
