In 2017, 725 investigations of animal cruelty were held, and this number doesn’t include the cases that aren’t reported or caught. The punishments for animal cruelty are not very effective and obviously do nothing to stop people from continuing to abuse animals.

According to NKUT and organization led by Best Friends Animal Society, Utah’s save rate is at 85.8% only 5.2% away from being the second no kill state in America New Hampshire being the first at 90%. Some cases cannot be helped so the rate isn’t at a full 100% to be considered a no kill state, this includes old age, sickness, and disabilities.

Utah’s no kill rate is very high, making shelters house more animals then they have ever had too. To get more space for other animals they have to adopt them out, making prices for these animals lower than they have been before. The prices for animals range from $10-$60 each animal, and in some cases they will even give them out for free.

Because it is so easy and cheap to adopt these animals, more and more are being abused, dumped in the streets, and killed. And the abuser’s punishment for this? They are not allowed to own animals, they have to pay for all the animals treatments, and they must receive counseling, if appointed by a judge. The judge on top of that may add other penalties as they see fit.

These punishments are extremely light and not effective. From 2008 to 2017, abusive rates for animals, mainly dogs, has jumped. They only way to fix this is to create harsher cruelty punishment laws for these abusers. The abuser’s should be arrested for up to two weeks depending on how bad the case is. They need to be fined up to $10,000, and need to do something to help the community.

Saving these animals is up to us, and we can’t do it by standing back. Creating these new laws will drop the abuse rate in Utah, making the no kill shelters actually effective and not making the problem worse.
